How to Speed Up a Website on Shared Hosting (Without Upgrading)

Boost Your Website Increase Caching

By enabling caching, the speed of your website can be drastically improved by saving static versions of your website content. Caching plugins such as W3 Total Cache or WP Rocket can also be used to reduce server load which in turn speeds up page load time.

I remember using caching and it improved my website’s load time by 50%, and lower the bounce rate to improve my website’s overall performance.

After reducing the number of plugins used on my website from 20 to 10, the loading speed of the site improved drastically from 3.5 seconds to 1.8 seconds.

Optimize Database

Being a WordPress website, my site suffers from slower loading speeds due to containing an excess of redundant information. WP-Optimize is an incredible tool which helps get rid of junk revisions, spam comments and other non-essential information.

When I would periodically clear the databased accumulated junk, my website was able to respond faster when loading pages and overall perform much better than before.

Implement a Content Delivery Network (CDN)

With the use of a CDN, the time taken to load tabs in my site reduced significantly. Having regions outside the US, greatly benefitted from this as even sites located further away from the US had faster speeds. Cloudflare and BunnyCDN are some of the more well known CDNs.

Now, after using a CDN, my site’s speed for users located in different parts of the world has drastically improved.

Reduce External Scripts and HTTP Requests

Excessive third-party resources such as ads, fonts, or analytics will slow down the speed of the page. It is best to limit the number of scripts hosted externally and, when possible, host resources locally.

I deleted various ad scripts and custom fonts that were not needed, which improved the performance significantly without sacrificing the visual appeal of the website.
